Carolyn Johnson - Educator and Chair of BELRAG (Basic Education & Literacy Rotary Action Group)
Carolyn Johnson is a member of the Yarmouth Rotary and in 2013-14 served as District Governor for D7780. She is Chair of BELRAG (Basic Education & Literacy Rotary Action Group), past Coordinator for TRF Cadre of Technical Advisors for BEL and will serve as Vice Chair for the Cadre (2021-2024). She is an advisor to the Rotary Foundation’s WaSH In Schools Target Challenge, and is a member of the TRF Grant Model Evaluation Team and the Programs of Scale Review Committee. Carolyn was Rotary Coordinator for Zone 32 (2017-2020). She is a frequent presenter at Rotary conventions, President Elect Training Seminars, Zone and District Conferences, and Rotary clubs. In 2008, Carolyn was honored to receive Rotary’s Service Above Self Award.
Carolyn is an educator with experience as a teacher, administrator and consultant. She was selected as a Maine Distinguished Educator. As Founder and past Director of the The Culture of Reading Program (CORP), a component of the Guatemala Literacy Project, she developed programs to provide professional development and resources in literacy education for indigenous schools in rural Guatemala. Beginning in 2007 with a single school, CORP now supports 90+ primary schools, 900+ teachers and provides direct support for more than 24,000 students. Carolyn is Chair of the Board of Safe Passage, an NGO that provides education for children living in the community surrounding the Guatemala City Dump. GLP and Safe Passage partner with Rotary in Guatemala and across North America to support quality education programs for some of the most needy communities in Guatemala.
Carolyn and her husband, PDG Peter Johnson, live in Yarmouth, Maine, USA. Both are Major Donors and Benefactors to The Rotary Foundation.
